MIA recorded passenger growth of 20% in first half of 201805 Jul 2018

Macau International Airport (MIA) recorded significant passenger growth in first half of 2018.  MIA handled 4 million passengers, an increase of 20% compared to the corresponding period in 2017. Flight movements increased by 12% to over 31,000 landings and takeoffs compared to the same period last year.  In the first half of 2018, the passenger traffic from the three major markets of MIA including Mainland China, China Taiwan and Southeast Asia, which recorded growth of 37%, 4% and 16% respectively over the same period last year. MIA has an average of 22,000 passengers per day.  In the first six months of this year, destination passengers increased by 22%, while MIA reduced relying on the number of transit passengers by about 1.6%. Passengers travel with conventional and low cost airlines increased by 26% and 9% respectively. 


MIA handled over 660,000 passengers in June, representing year-on-year increases of 19%. Flight movements increased 14% to over 5,100 compared to the same period in 2017. This is mainly attributable to the increase in the number of visitors to and from the routes of Mainland China and Southeast Asia, which increased by 41% and 13% respectively compared with the same month last year. China Taiwan market reports slightly increase of 3%. Up to the end of June 2018, there are 29 airlines operate at MIA connecting Macau to some 49 destinations covering area in Mainland China, China Taiwan, Southeast Asia and Northeast Asia. The passenger traffic and flight movements of MIA are expected to grow steadily in the second half of 2018.


In the first half year of 2018, MIA successfully attracted three new airlines flying to Macau namely Royal Air Charter Service, Small Planet Airlines and Royal Flight Airlines. Royal Flight Airlines once again arrived Macau at the beginning of May 2018, offering weekly service between Macau and Moscow. Different from previous years, the airline provides regular schedule service to Moscow instead of charter base service.  Just entering the second half of the year, Hainan Airlines is planning to launch two weekly flights from Macau to Sanya in early July. Cambodia Airways will establish regular service from Macau to Phnom Penh, Siem Reap and Sihanoukville in July.  In order to provide more holiday destination options for Macau residents and travelers, some airlines will add schedule flight frequency during the summer holiday, as well as charter flights to Nagoya of Japan is expected to enrich the travel options for passengers.  In the third and fourth quarter of this year, it is expected that MIA will continue to have new carriers gradually adding new routes and operations to Macau.


The summer travel high season is approaching. In addition to ensuring the implementation of its core value of “Safety, Efficiency and Effectiveness”, MIA has arranged a series of interactive, singing and musical instruments performance at the airport in July and August. MIA hopes to inject summer atmosphere into the airport and create a joyful, pleasant and unforgettable summer memories for the passenger before each trip.
