Macao Visitor Profile 2008

Data for the annual Macao Visitor Profile comes from field surveys of visitors and conducted over 50 randomly selected days throughout the year. Interview locations included busy downtown, shopping, commercial, and residential areas in Macao. The total sample consisted of 5,025 visitors. Only visitors who had stayed at least one night in Macao were interviewed in 2008.

By Sex: According to the data, 53% of the respondents are female and 47% are male. By Age: The majority are young adults or middle-age, with 33% aged between 25-34 and 30% from 35-44. By Education: More than half has a bachelor degree or above. By Occupation: The three major occupations are white collar worker (27%), professionals (19%) and blue collar worker (15%). By Income: 76% of the respondents have monthly income equal to or less than MOP20,000 and inside this group are more than 1/4 of the respondents with monthly income lower than or equal to MOP 5,000.

The visitors mainly came from Mainland China (44%), Hong Kong (35%) and Taiwan (11%). 88% traveled to Macao as a FIT and 12% in packaged tours. The primary purpose of visiting Macao was for leisure (70%), visiting friends/relatives (VFR) (20%) and business (9%). Among leisure visitors, 29% of them indicated that the casino was a major factor which attracts them to come to Macao, while shopping, cuisine and heritage were other major attracting factors (27%, 24% and 18% respectively).

The primary purpose of visiting Macao is leisure despite the origin countries. However, the first choices for a significant number of respondents were the cuisine (42%) and casino (26%). For Mainland Chinese and Taiwan tourists, casino and shopping were the highlights. On the other hand, visitors from Korea and Thailand showed higher interest in the heritage and shopping in Macao.

Within 5,025 overnight-stayed visitors, 80% are repeated visitors and the average length of stay is 2.99 days. Hong Kong visitors are likely to stay shorter than others. Their average length of stay is 2.35 days while Korean visitors stayed 5.69 days 0n average.
