Visit to Runway EMAS in Yunnan TengChong Airport Advancing Safety Factor of Macau Airport

2014 / 04 / 11

Coordinated by the Civil Aviation Authority of MSAR ( AACM), a delegation of MIA had a two day trip from 27th – 28th Mar 2014 to Yunnan TengChong Airport – the first airport self-developed  the Engineered Materials Arrestor System (EMAS). The delegation was composed of Macau International Airport Company Limited (CAM), Administration of Airports Limited (ADA) and Civil Engineering Laboratory of Macau (LECM), with an aim to visit the operation and Maintenance of EMAS and study installed this system is it fulfill the requirement of runway safety zone of ICAO.

Engineered materials arrestor system (EMAS) is a specific mechanical properties of the collapsing material, with dozens of centimeters thickness extension line on the track laying on the ground, one blocking place is formed. Once the aircraft overruns the runway and enters EMAS, that collapsing material will be broken in the rolling wheel, in order to absorb the kinetic energy of the aircraft.

The 2350 meters long and 45 meters wide runway in Yunnan TengChong Airport, setting CAT I Instrument Landing System and Navigational Lights Monitoring System which can fulfill the requirements of aircraft taking off and landing for the type B737-700, A319, A320 etc. Since TengChong Airport is located in mountainous areas and the runway is surrounded by the cliff, EMAS is recommended by experts to avoid the risk of the plane run off the runway.

The runway in MIA is built by the sea and the safety area with and barrier outside, with is in the same situation as TengChong Airport. Visiting TengChong Airport did not only deepen the understanding of EMAS, but also provide a reference for MIA to install related system in the future.

In order to ensure the runway safety zone of Macau International Airport (MIA)which is comply with the latest recommendation of ICAO and with the overall development plan of airport expansion, MIA has been doing the research by using related technology which would increase the margin of safetyand alsoto ensure that the sustainable development of the airport energetically.

The delegation members include: AACM: Mr. Kevin Lam and Mr. Tony Cheang– Director and Safety Officer of AACM Airport Infrastructure & Air Navigation Department; CAM: Mr. Sandro Kou and Mr. Tony Lam– Acting Director and Deputy Director of Infrastructure Development Department; ADA: Mr. Aubrey Liu - Acting Head of Civil Mechanic Electric Department; LECM: Mr. Sun Jie – Civil Engineer.
