Macau Airport Celebrates 6 Million Record-Breaking Passenger Volume Passenger Terminal Building Completing Next Year for Capacity Upgrade

Macau International Airport (MIA) celebrated the new height of 6 million passenger volume of the year on the 30th November 2016. MIA has always been bringing about passengers volume 10 times of the local population. The more international passengers would support the Macao SAR Government to build up Macau into a World Center of Tourism and Leisure. Meanwhile, Macau International Airport Company Limited (CAM) has put into investment for the North Extension project of the Passenger Terminal Building, expecting to raise the annual capacity from 6 million to 7.5 million passengers upon the construction completion in the second half year of 2017.

In the celebration of 6 million passengers, representatives of MIA’s operation units gathered along at the terminal building to mark this significant milestone and the joy from their hard works. Mr. Eric Fong, Director of Marketing Department of CAM expressed that after years of hard work on developing diversified market, MIA hit a new record this year to have handled over 6 million passengers.  The successful achievement relies on the support from the Macao SAR Government while working closely with the airport operating units, as well as fully utilizing the self-advantage, realizing forward-looking development.

In terms of airlines development, MIA always encourages airlines to increase frequencies in the potential market and launch new destinations together, especially on long haul routes. It actively promotes the use of 5th freedom to develop mid-long haul destinations such as the charter flight to Russia, aiming to offer more travel options to travelers. At the same time, MIA continues to strengthen flights to Mainland China and China Taiwan market, and actively expand Southeast Asia and other international markets. In 2016, MIA welcomed a numbers of new airlines and launched 3 new routes, namely, China - Guiyang, Indonesia – Manado, and Japan – Fukuoka. The new routes will bring more choices and convenience to local residents and travelers. From January to October this year, passenger volume increased by 14%, Mainland China increased by 2%, China Taiwan and Southeast Asia increased by 18% and 22% respectively. Passengers travel with conventional and low cost airlines increased by 18% and 7% respectively.

MIA will continue expand its air service network, connecting Macau to the every part of the world.  To meet with the anticipated growth in air service, MIA continues to provide high standard quality service, and further expand extensive network to more destinations.
