By 4 December, 2018, Macau International Airport (MIA) has handled 37,600 tons of cargo throughput, with a year-on-year growth of 10%, exceeding the total volume of cargo during 2017. The increase of cargo volume is mainly due to the fast-growing volume of e-commerce cargo and the return of freighter services to local market. Currently, Qatar Airways is operating two freighters weekly to Los Angeles while Malaysia Airlines and Aviastar-TU Airlines are offering once a week and fourteen weekly freighter services to Kuala Lumpur.
The freighter services to Los Angeles are the first all-cargo service flying directly to North America in recent years. The professional services provided by Qatar Airways will further improve the service capacity of cargo in MIA, enabling direct delivery by air to North America while reducing dependence on transit flights from Taiwan to North America.
As one of China's major trading partners, Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) build a platform for China's enterprises to establish a huge business network and develop e-commerce business, which indicates great potential and also being a particular strength of Mainland enterprises. MIA introduces freighter services operated by Malaysia Airlines and Aviastar-TU Airlines to Kuala Lumpur at this stage will provide more import/export options for cargo enterprises in Macau and Greater Bay Area (GBA).
Mr. Frank Wu - Director of Logistic and General Aviation Development Department of Macau International Airport Company Limited (CAM) said, “The main contributors of air cargo growth in MIA are support from local cargo industry and the government as well as the launching of all-cargo services flying to North America and Kuala Lumpur. The new routes will be a positive factor for delivery service improvement towards products such as high-tech gadgets, parts, garment and necessities within GBA. MIA will also take the opportunity of the launching of Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge, discussing with airlines about the possibilities of developing new all-cargo routes to Manila, Singapore and Russia. We expect to further optimize and expand MIA's services in GBA. We will also keep close cooperation with all communities and strengthen overall competitiveness of MIA.”
