Macau International Airport - Procurement of New X-Ray Screening Machines and Explosive Trace Detectors

2018 / 12 / 07

In order to upgrade the security system and flow in Macau International Airport (MIA), MIA has coordinated with Customs and airport security operator - SEMAC, for the replacement of replacing 2 X-Ray screening machines for Customs operation and procuring 9 sets of explosive trace detectors for airport security.

The new X-Ray screening machine is equipped with two X-Ray generators which can provide 2 dimension images by using the reflection of X-Ray at different angles. Compare to the old X-Ray screening machines with single generator which can only provide 1 dimension image, the new 2 dimension machine can provide more information for increasing the accuracy and decreasing the blind point. As a result, the screening performance can be enhanced. Following the completion of the operator training and machine configuration, the new X-Ray screening machines have been deployed and started to operate at Customs Cargo Office and Passenger Terminal Building Arrival Level Customs Checking Channel.

The function of airport used explosive trace detectors is to rapidly detect and assist operator to classify explosive ingredients by sampling the surface of testing objects with dedicated explosive testing papers or sniffer. Currently, 9 explosive trace detectors have been deployed at different location of MIA to check the cargo goods and passenger luggage. Following this procurement, the total units of explosive trace detectors will become 18 which can highly increase the efficiency of security checking and number of explosive checking locations.

In response to the airport future trend for the new requirement on the security standard and counter-terrorism, MIA will continuously put effort to strengthen and upgrade the security system. Furthermore, Macau International Airport will continue to introduce any new type of security screening equipment, for example high power computed tomography luggage scanner which can provide 3D images and millimeter wave human body scanner in order to increase security screening standard.
