Macau International Airport Traffic Reach 5.5 Million in 2014

To celebrate the season festival and bring joy and happiness to all travelers during Christmas, a Portuguese Guitar and Fado musical band performed at the MIA from 23rd to 25th December 2014, bringing pleasant holiday memories to passengers before their departure. Santa Claus was at the airport giving Christmas sweets, with the best wishes from Macau International Airport to all young children travelers.

Passenger traffic developed rapidly throughout the whole year. The single day aircraft movement and passenger traffic both recorded stable growth. MIA carried over 5,480,000 passengers and 53,000 aircraft movements in 2014; both recorded increase of 9%and 7% respectively comparing to the 2013. The positive tendency had been maintained for four quarters.  For the first quarter, MIA received over 1.28 million passengers and recorded 12,500 aircraft movements, both up 10% comparing to the same quarter last year.

For the second quarter, MIA recorded passenger volume surpassed 1.32 million and aircraft movements over 12,900, representing 7% increase respectively comparing to the same period of last year which indicating the growth of passenger market is stabilized while the frequencies and the destinations added are becoming more diversified. In order to meet future increase in demand, MIA constantly enhances infrastructure development and services, the new Express link facilities located at the north side of the passenger terminal have been put into use, the new facilities will enhance service quality and at the same time further encourage the Pearl River Delta passengers to use MIA, providing passengers hassle free travel experience.

Faced with the impact on the part of mainland routes caused by the adjustment of domestic policy, MIA encouraged airlines to actively use the fifth freedom rights to expand the aviation market which successfully attracted new airlines launched flight to Palau. The third quarter kept up and recorded Passenger volume surpassed 1.46 millionwith daily passenger traffic over 15,000 and aircraft movements over 13,000, representing 3% increase respectively comparing to the same period of last year.

The last quarter of 2014, MIA welcomed the Tigerair Taiwan launched flight to Macau, providing more flight options to Taipei and Kaohsiung. This quarter MIA recorded a stable growth in both passenger traffic volume and aircraft movement. Passenger volume surpassed 1.4 million representing a year-on-year increase of 9%, and aircraft movement over 14,045recorded a 10% increase comparing to the same period last year.  Southeast Asia occupied 38% of the whole passenger throughput.  The 3 main markets such as Mainland China, China Taiwan and Southeast Asia recorded 14%, 6% and 7% increase respectively.  

For the route development, there were four new airlines joined MIA this year. Jetstar Pacific Airlines launched Da Nang and Hanoi service, providing 14 air services per week between Da Nang to Macau and daily services between Hanoi to Macau. Bassaka Air commenced its first international flight service between Macau and Phnom Penh; meanwhile, the Asian Air took advantage of traffic rights in Macau, successful developed a new route to Palau via Macau. Tigerair Taiwan also began operations in December, the low cost carrier will be providing more choices to passengers. On the other hand, Air Macau launched four weekly direct flights to Tianjin while added frequencies on some popular routes; Xiamen airlines also launched the flight from Dalian to Macau via Hangzhou on March 2014. Macau International Airport will continue to leverage strengths, develop regular flights and charter flights, diversifying markets.

With the increasing number of coming flights and passengers, MIA will continue pay attention on flight safety and security, at the same time, optimizing services and enhancing the travel experience for our passengers. Recently, MIA develop and upgrade the smart phone App to provide diversified information and convenience to passengers through the interactive platform, further promote the development of intelligent airport.
