2019 / 03 / 13

The 13th IATA World Cargo Symposium (WCS) was held in Singapore from 12th to 14th March 2019. Mr. Jim Leung, Deputy Director of Logistic and General Aviation Development Department (LGD) of Macau International Airport Company Limited (CAM) attended this prestigious conference of air freight industry.

This year’s symposium focuses on pushing the Air Cargo Industry from discussion to execution. Over 1,000 representatives including airlines, airports, forwarders, ground handlers; sales agents, customs, shippers, and IT solution providers participated in this significant annual air cargo event. This conference provided a large range of panel discussions on Air Cargo Industry such as Asia Market, E-commerce, Virtual Security, Operations, Pharmaceuticals and Perishables.

In 2018 e-commerce reached 11.5% of the global retail sales. The momentum of e-commerce development is stronger, especially in Mainland and Southeast Asia. The turnover of TaoBao, Jingdong and Lazada is rising and we can’t ignore that the growth is only in its infancy. With a population of 620 million in Southeast Asia, the development potential is huge. Some reports forecast that the Southeast Asia e-commerce market will reach a scale of US$88 billion by 2025. Therefore MIA will take this opportunity to continue the discussion with airlines about the possibilities of developing new freighter routes to Kuala Lumpur, Manila, Singapore and Bangkok. MIA expect to further optimize and expand cargo services between Macau and Southeast Asia, to strengthen overall competitiveness of MIA in Greater Bay Area.
