2021 / 07 / 27

Chairman of the Executive Committee of Macau International Airport Company Limited (CAM) Dr. Deng Jun and the Executive Directors Mr. Chu Tan Neng and Mr. Lei Si Tai had led a delegation to visit Mr. Ma Bing - Director General of Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) Central and Southern Regional Administration and Mr. Zhang Jian – Director of CAAC Central and Southern Air Traffic Management Bureau (ATMB) on 23rd July, 2021.

Since the epidemic, due to the continuous adjustment of the epidemic prevention and immigration measures of various countries and regions, the passenger volume of Macau International Airport (MIA) has recovered to 10% from last year.  By the first half of this year (2021), there were more than 670,000 passengers, which was about 20% of the pre-epidemic value.  Currently, routes to China are mainly restored in the market, among the 21 routes to China, 70% of the passengers choose routes to Eastern China, such as Shanghai, Hangzhou, Xiamen, etc.  Among them, the Shanghai route increased to an average of twelve round-trip flights per day in July and August, returning to the level before the epidemic.  MIA will continue to strictly follow the epidemic measure by the Macao SAR Government, check the management procedure and operational details in regular manner, and plug any loopholes that may arise, as to provide a good development space for Macau's civil aviation industry, and provide a safe travel environment for Macau citizens and tourists.

Mr. Ma Bing is very concerned about the development of Macau International Airport; he believes the civil aviation industry of Macau is in a very important and special position to the construction of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and even the national civil aviation industry.  At the same time, he learnt that MIA has made arrangement about the training of civil aviation management and air traffic control in Portuguese Speaking Countries, has served as a very important bridge for civil aviation exchanges.  During the "14th Five-Year Plan" period, China Civil Aviation will steadily expand the coverage of airports, further improve the national comprehensive airport system, and effectively support the implementation of major national strategies, MIA is positioned as “Base in Macau, backed by motherland and face to the world.”  Both parties believe that in the future to deepen exchanges in airport construction and other aspects, provide technical and civil aviation professional guidance and support for the construction of MIA.

The Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area has small airspace and large traffic volume, making it one of the most complex areas in the global airspace.  The planning outline of the Greater Bay Area clearly proposes to build a world-class airport cluster, which is important for strengthening airspace coordination and air management cooperation, and optimizing and adjusting the airspace structure, to improve the efficiency of airspace resource utilization and enhance air traffic control support capabilities, clear requirements have been put forward.  Mr. Zhang Jian stated that the air traffic control automation system is inseparable from innovative industry safety management concepts, and is also inseparable from the support of advanced technology. The upgrade and maintenance of the air traffic control system is also indispensable.  Chairman Deng stated that Air traffic control must not be ambiguous when it comes to safety. Therefore, related systems such as communications, navigation, surveillance systems (CNS), air traffic management coordinated decision-making systems (CDM), electronic flight schedule systems, etc., need to be regularly reviewed and upgraded with the bureau to ensure aviation and passenger safety.

Other participants in the meeting include: CAAC Central and Southern Regional Administration – Chief of the Office Mr. Yang Shuijun, Chief of the Planning Division Mr. Tang Junfang, Deputy Chief of the Transportation Division Mr. Yang Yingyong and Deputy Chief of Airport Management Division Mr. Liu Heng.  Participants from CAAC Central and Southern Air Traffic Management Bureau (ATMB) – Secretary of the Party Committee Mr. Nie Jianxiong, Deputy Director Mr. Yuan Zheng and Chief of the Office Mr. Xiang Hongtao.  Participants from CAM—Director of Executive Committee Office of CAM Ms. Katy Lo, Director of Corporate Communications and Policy Research Office Ms. Vicki Mou.
