MIA Passenger Volume Hit Record High Creating a New Starting Point 02 Jan 2017

In 2016, Macau International Airport (MIA) recorded over 6.6 million passenger traffic volume, with over 56,000 aircraft movements, representing a 14% and 2% increase respectively comparing to last year. This made a new high record since its 21 years operation. In December, it was the peak season for travel during Christmas and New Year's Eve holiday, MIA connects to 41 destinations covering area in mainland China, China Taiwan, Southeast Asia and North Asia attracted more local and international travelers.

MIA hit a new passenger traffic volume record in 2016, the successful achievement came from the joint efforts and close cooperation among each of our business partners, to cope with Macao SAR Government policy to building up Macau into a World Center of Tourism and Leisure and making full use of the airport advantages.

In 2016, MIA successfully attracted 7 new Airlines flying to Macau namely AirExplore SRO, Vietjet Air, Far Eastern Air Transport, Air Seoul, PT Lion Mentari Airlines, JSC Royal Flight Airlines and Nok Air. MIA always encourages airlines to increase frequencies in the potential market, especially on long haul routes. For the first time MIA used the 5th freedom right to develop mid-long haul destinations such as charter flight service to Russia. We increased three new international routes namely Guiyang of China, Manado of Indonesia and Fukuoka of Japan. The addition of new carriers and new routes bringing more choices and conveniences to travelers. In 2016, Mainland China market increased by 4%, China Taiwan and Southeast Asia market increased by 15% and 20% respectively.  There was a growth of 16% and 9% in passengers taking legacy and low cost airlines.

The break-through passenger volume in 2016 created a new starting point of 2017, MIA will continue to serve as the air bridge connecting Macau to the world. In the aspect of market development, we will fully develop long-haul route, aiming to increase and change the current passenger market structure, thus attracting more international and local travelers flying to and from MIA. With the development of the market demand, the airport keeps upgrading the conditions of its hardware and software. In 2017, a number of infrastructure projects is expected to be completed which include the north terminal building expansion project, upon completion, the airport capacity will increase to 7.5 million passengers per annual. In line with the development of general aviation business, the business jets hangar construction project will be completed in 2017, the new facilities will help to attract more high-end travelers, enriching the market diversification. The airport runway will be optimized by overlaying to further enhance the carrying capacity and safety performance of the runway effectively.
