MIA records passenger growth of 18% in first half of 201905 Jul 2019

Macau International Airport (MIA) recorded significant passenger growth in first half of 2019. From January to June of this year, MIA handled 4.72 million passengers, an increase of 18% compared to the corresponding period in 2018. Flight movements increased by 19% to over 37,000 landings and takeoffs compared to the same period last year. In the first half of 2019, the passenger traffic from the three major markets of MIA including Mainland China, China Taiwan and Southeast Asia, which recorded growth of 31%, 7% and 13% respectively over the same period last year. MIA has an average of 26,000 passengers per day. In the first six months of this year, destination passengers increased by 18% while the number of transit passengers also increased substantially by 22%. Passengers travel with conventional and low cost airlines increased by 15% and 25% respectively. The passenger traffic and flight movements of MIA are expected to grow steadily in the second half of 2019.


MIA handled over 780,000 passengers in June, representing year-on-year increases of 17%. Flight movements increased 22% to over 6,344 compared to the same period in 2018. This is mainly attributable to the increase in the number of visitors to and from the routes of Mainland China, China Taiwan and Southeast Asia, which increased by 33%, 8% and 9% respectively compared with the same month last year. Up to the end of June 2019, there are 28 airlines operate at MIA connecting Macau to some 56 destinations covering area in Mainland China, China Taiwan, Southeast Asia and Northeast Asia.


In the first half year of 2019, MIA successfully attracted airlines to launch a number of new routes: Shenzhen Airlines introduced Macau to Nanchang services, Jeju Air inaugurated Macau to Muan services and Zhejiang Loong Airlines established new services from Macau to Enshi, etc. Just entering the second half of the year, JC Cambodia Airlines is planning to launch flights from Macau to Myanmar while both Bamboo Airways and VietJet Air will establish regular service from Macau to Nha Trang, etc. In order to provide more holiday destination options for Macau residents and travelers, some airlines will add schedule flight frequency during the summer holiday in July and August to enrich the travel options for passengers. MIA will continue to develop a diversified aviation market, and it is expected to further drive the growth of passenger traffic of MIA and maintain the trend of growth. MIA will cooperate with airlines to develop more potential medium and long-haul charter routes in tandem with the Macau SAR government to develop Macau as a “World tourism and leisure center”. In the third and fourth quarter of this year, it is expected that MIA will continue to have new carriers gradually adding new routes and operations to Macau.


The summer travel high season is approaching. MIA has arranged a series of interactive, speed portrait illustration, singing and musical instruments performance at the airport in July and August. MIA hopes to inject summer atmosphere into the airport and create a joyful and unforgettable summer memories for the passenger. In response to the steady increase in the number of passengers, MIA will accelerate the pace of improvement of airport facilities in the future. To make full use of the advantages of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge, the MIA Check-in Centre at Macau Border Inspection Building on the Bridge is underway, and will strive to provide convenient travel services for passengers as soon as possible. At the same time, MIA has planned to install more Self Check-in Kiosks to speed up the handling of passenger traffic and provide more convenient for passenger.
